Finalising your dependants’ grant

If you applied for a Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants Grant or Parents Learning Allowance in the last academic year, the Student Loan Company may need your income confirmation for the academic year in which you have received your grant.

Finalisation
Finalisation is the process at the end of the academic year for all students who have received Grants for Dependants (GFDs) including Parents’ Learning Allowance, Childcare Grant and Adult Dependants’ Grant and have a partner/spouse or another adult dependant.
This process allows SLC to check that students have received their correct entitlement.

The provisional assessment at the start of the academic year is based on a student’s estimated household income and financial commitments for the relevant academic year (for a September starter this would be 1st September - 31st August). The finalised assessment is based on the actual household income and financial commitments for the academic year. In addition student must prove all sponsor’s (or other adult dependant’s) income and any financial commitments that they want to be included.

A fully completed Confirmation of Income for Dependants' Grants form (DGCI) must be received from every student, signed by the student and their partner/other adult dependant. It should also include evidence of all income and financial commitments.

** The relevant forms can be found here: http://www.sfengland.slc.co.uk/confirmincome **

Student’s with GFDs who are not subject to finalisation:
Single parents
Student/student splits
Under 25’s living with partner with child(ren)

Financial Commitments Evidence:
Financial commitments evidence must show every payment made in the academic year. We will not accept proof for 1 month and use this for the rest of the academic year.
• Bank statements showing every payment made. These are to be annotated and not highlighted as highlighter pen can make scanned copies unreadable.
• Statements/signed letters from providers detailing the actual amounts paid to them in the academic year – this can be either the monthly figures paid or just one figure giving the total amount.
• Receipts, clearly showing purpose and date.
• For child maintenance we will accept a letter from whomever the child is living with to confirm the amount they received in the academic year. This can be either the monthly figures or just one figure of the total amount or payslips showing deducted maintenance.
• Where a student wishes SLC to consider a financial commitment they have previously not considered, evidence that this started before the start of their course, with their continuous payments throughout the academic year, will be needed.
• SLC do not accept payment schedules as evidence of any payments made e.g. Council Tax bills
