► Referenda

When the Union has its most important decision to make it asks the whole membership (that's all students at Brunel) what they think in a Referendum. When a decision has been made this way it cannot be overruled by any other part of the Union as it is considered to be the ultimate voice Brunel students. So, a decision made by Referendum cannot be overruled by the Student Officers, Student Assembly, or Union Meetings. In fact, a Referendum might be called by students to challenge a decision made by any of those individuals or bodies.

Remember, you can call a Referendum by creating a petition that is signed by 150 Brunel students. To be able to hold a Referendum your proposal must be clear and worded as a question that can be answered with either a yes or a no. Full details can be found in Bye-Law E of the UBS Constitution.

A Recent Example

The most recent Referendum held by the UBS was at the same time as the Spring Elections in 2009 and asked students whether they wanted to approve the new Constitution that had been drafted by the Student Officers at the time. 90% of the 2,600 student who voted were in favour of the new Constitution so it has been adopted and the Union's democratic structures have been changed. If you are interested in reading more of the background information that was provided in advance of the vote please visit the Referendum website.
