The University and the UBS both retail significant volumes of alcohol on campus aimed at predominantly under 25 year old market. Both organisations therefore have a moral, legal and pastoral responsibility to ensure that that alcohol is retailed in a responsible manner and that customers have information to hand to make informed choices. This activity within the Union has been recognised in us achieving Best Bar None status for the last 5 years. The Large number of students visiting and living on campus also means that there will always be a market for the trade in illegal drugs within a minority of students and with it that activity attracts other crime. We have a responsibility to ensure that students are aware of the dangers of drug taking and the consequences that it may have on their academic and work careers and lifestyle, and a responsibility for the safety of all other students through the reduction of crime on campus.
This has led to our annual focus in December on Alcohol and drugs Awareness which we feel is an important part of the Union’s campaigning activity and benefits all on campus.
