We are the Brunel Burners American Football team made up of approx. 40 members. Last year was our first season in the BUAFL and we did extremely well finishing 4 wins and 4 losses, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. We accommodate all players, rookie or experienced, as long as you are a Brunel student.

The club was founded in 2009 by Ayman Abd-Elaziz, who managed to secure nearly 10000 pounds in grants from sport England as well as raising money from a ‘Jocks VS Cheerleaders’ night in Brunel’s Academy, in order to fund the creation of this team.

We now have a large membership, professional looking kit, and a 4 man coaching team.

The Archery Club is open to all students – whether they are novices or experienced archers. We focus on teaching target archery to students for both indoor and outdoor conditions. This year was started with a very successful Brunel Open – one of the largest and earliest novice tournaments of the academic year in the UK, which saw over 120 archers compete throughout the day from Universities and external clubs from all over the country. With new equipment we are becoming one of the best equipped Archery clubs compared to other universities, which gives our members the best chance for development and improvement. Our new contract with an external club – Hillingdon Juniors – for the rental of our club’s bosses and stands has seen us secure an annual payment from the club which can be put back into the club.

The Brunel University Athletics Club has a large family of members and encourages participation at all levels. Our club accommodates those wishing to raise fitness levels, improve on current skills and engage in competitive athletics across the country. We also welcome athletics supporters who have a keen interest in becoming involved within the club.

Aside from training and competing there will be social events throughout the year for all the members to get to know each other and have a good time.

Brunel University Badminton Club is one of the largest sports clubs in the University with around 80 members. The aim of the club is to promote and facilitate the sport of Badminton to all Brunel students regardless of their level of ability. Our members range from the casual beginners to those with high level competitive experience. Last year, our men’s first team was successful, coming a fantastic second in the Premier South League after only being promoted the year before. The 2010/11 season saw the introduction of the men’s second team with great results.

The Badminton Club operates with two weekly sessions. The first session is on Monday, with coaching provided for squad members; the second session is on Fridays and is meant for all our members. This is purely for social play.

The club is one of few at the University who has a team represented in the Premier division. The first team compete in the BUCS premier south, with the 2nd team competing in the BUCS division 2A. We provide opportunities for non-squad members to play competitively on a Friday night for 2 hours. This allows us to cater for a wide range of abilities and playing styles. The mens first team were ranked 6th in the country in the 2010/11 season at the BUCS championship. We are the highest ranked team in the country who do not have the benefit of basketball specific scholarships.

As the women’s basketball team we play friendly basketball as well as competitively at university level. There are two teams to be a part of; one of them is our development team which allows both strong and inexperienced players to develop their basketball skills in a relaxed environment. The other team is our competitive squad team. Women's Basketball is for those who have a passion for the competitive sport as well as for those who just want to benefit from healthy exercise and socialise while trying something new.

With a team consisting of over 20 members and 5 committee members we take time to support the community with charity fund raisers and by taking part in university awareness weeks, One Week is an example where we raised money and university awareness for the NSPCC by hosting an auction and cake sale which raised over £200. There have also been other Brunel sports events which have seen work and support from the members of the women’s basketball team.

Females of all abilities are welcomed and catered for on the basketball team, for our most confident players we have our ‘Squad-1A of British Universities and Colleges (BUC), South Eastern Conference’. We then have the ‘Development Program’ which offers opportunities for less confident players to practice and enhance their skills and knowledge of the game, players of all abilities are welcome to attend the Development sessions as it is a comfortable time where you are able to learn basic skills as well as socialise.

The Brunel Women’s Basketball Team in the academic year 2010/11 successfully made it to the semi-finals of the BUCs trophy playoffs, rather narrowly missing a place at the finals. We won against our Varsity rivals St. Mary’s on all 3 occasions with the largest win equalling a 63 point lead. Our main events consisted of bake sales and an auction, all of which raised money for the great cause of the NSPCC and drew attention and awareness for their cause and importance.

Brunel University boxing club is an active club (competitively). Training sessions are held three times a week where the experienced hone their abilities and the fitness seekers come to train. The membership mainly consists of students but there has also been an increase in external members making Brunel boxing ever increasingly diverse.

This year we have seen an influx of members totalling 89 and hoping to capitalise on this further. Not only has there been an increase in members but there has also been a rise in the number of competitive boxers for the club. We are also happy to say that the increase in medals during competitions has also been proportionate to the membership growth. We are proud to say we have had 7 boxers fight for Brunel this year in the British University Championships and the English University Championships.

The club won 7 medals, four being gold and the rest silver with 3 of our Gold Medals being won by our female boxers. Not only is this testament to our diversity as a club, but also to how strongly believe in our training and the abilities of our members despite age, gender or experience. We insure that every member choosing to train pulls their weight and remains consistent with progress. Beginners and veterans equally.

Here at Brunel Boxing, we take what we do seriously and our success pays homage to the dedication and hard work of our committee and members, the old and new alike. This year marks a fresh start for us and the chance to build on our previous successes. The new committee will be looking at more ways of enhancing our member’s experiences making them stronger, faster, fitter... BETTER. Expect to see more dedication, more competing members, more shows and above all more medals.

We are the Brunel Blizzards Cheerleading Club. We are currently a competitive squad and compete at level 3 co-ed at two competitions throughout the year. We are a relatively new club and have been established for only 4 years but we are developing rapidly and have made our mark within the cheerleading world this year. We came 1st in our University National competition and 2nd in the ICC Nationals against allstar teams which has been a massive achievement. The squad consists of 34 members who train 3 times a week and also give up their time at weekends to train. We are coached by Gemma Smithers (a member of an international recognised team, Unity Allstars). We have also introduced a new Hiphop cheer squad this year. There are currently 7 members but we are looking to expand this. The dancers did exceptionally well, coming in 3rd at the University National competition which was their first ever performance. We cater for every level from beginner to expert and all work together to improve skills and performance.

We climb and teach a climbing course. We also:

- This year had over 100 members join the club & sign up to the 1 year training course

- Each “fresher’s trip” to the Peak District and North Wales was fully booked and we had to find additional transport

- We held social events at least once EVERY week in term one, every other week in term two, and will, when possible in term three (Meet and Greets/Xmas Dinner/Annual Dinner/White t-shirt night and MANY more)

- Several fresher’s are now on the next new exec

- Trips ran smoothly due to detailed prior planning, trip budgeting was also very good, and profits were made, this money was re-fed into the club to assist with Annual Dinner costs

- We had two teams and multiple individuals who competed in Lube and two teams who competed in BUCS 2011

Brunel Mens Cricket Club has seen growing success in the last two years, with the 1st XI achieving promotion and winning the league cup two years running. The club is also increasing in members every year, with 2010-11 seeing 77 members join the club. The club has also seen tremendous development. The purchase of a bowling machine and numerous training aids has had a significant impact on squad and social members to get the most of their allotted training time. We train every Friday evening and also have an invitational squad training session on Wednesday mornings with a highly qualified coach. We also have a healthy social side to the club with drinks after training sessions and club nights out. The Christmas dinner, curry night and the ‘gloves are on’ socials have been particular highlights of the year and really helped to integrate new members to the club. We are also proud of our charity events, holding indoor tournaments, sweepstakes and fun activities that involve the whole club, other sports teams and raise money for RAG charities at the same time. We welcome all abilities of cricketers and look forward to seeing you in the nets!

Women’s Cricket Club is a relatively small club which has been running only for the past few years. We welcome all levels and have no trials. From beginners to girls that have played in their school team. We have an excellent coaching system which teaches new members all the skills required to play this sport. the basics but also developing more experienced players.

We are a constantly developing club and have improved greatly this year.

Our previous members being third years and the second years had graduated or went on placement. With just two of us left we still decided to attempt to keep the club going. In fact we have doubled in members compared to last year. Our big achievement this year was to have grown from just two members to sixteen!

We had a fantastic year through training, matches, socials. Getting involved in many activities such supporting other clubs during Academy Flirt nights, clubs such as men’s football, ultimate Frisbee, men’s cricket, swimming, sailing and kayaking. Taking part in the Rag indoor cricket tournament to raise money, dedicating a session of training as part of the Give it a Go campaign. Competing in the dodgeball tournament held by women’s hockey on Women’s Day during One World Week and helping with the refreshments for the Global Poverty project to raise awareness that poverty can be stopped. Cheering Brunel teams against the St Mary’s varsity games.
