MAKING MUM PROUD BEREAVEMENT FUND
Making Mum Proud is a charity set up to support students in higher education between the ages of 18 and 26, who have lost a parent or legal guardian. Their first initiative is the launch of the Making Mum Proud Bereavement Fund. The MMP Bereavement Fund, in collaboration with the Union of Brunel Students, has been opened up first to students studying at Brunel University London.
Making Mum Proud will consider applications for financial support towards tuition fees, purchase course resources, contribution towards accommodation costs, utility bills, etc.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be a registered Brunel Student (not in abeyance or in appeal process)
- be able to demonstrate the loss of a parent or legal guardian while studying at Brunel University
- provide evidence of need, eg free arrears letter from bursary, resources (copy of course list/estimate for repair), accommodation costs letter from landlord, utility bills from suppliers, replacement furniture (photograph/estimate for repairs). Such evidence must be original documents. Copies will not be accepted.
Available Support
- The minimum award is £50 and the maximum award is £250.
- The MMP Bereavement Fund is discretionary and there is no automatic entitlement.
- Full applications are considered within 5-7 working days of submission of a complete application form. Decisions will be communicated to applicants within 10 working days of submission of a complete application form.
- Where an applicant is awarded some financial support by MMP, the amount awarded is final and there is no right of appeal.
- Applicants are limited to one application for financial support each academic year.

What happens after you submit an application?
On receipt of the application, the Union of Brunel Students’ will verify student registration. An incomplete application may delay verification and subsequent decision by Making Mum Proud.
Union of Brunel Students will communicate Making Mum Proud’s decision to the applicant within 10 working days of submission of a complete application form. Other relevant documentation may be requested, e.g. proof of identify.
What happens if the application is successful?
If the application is successful, the award may be paid directly to the creditor(s) (landlord, utility supplier). In some cases, the award may be paid to the applicant.
Important
Where the MMP Bereavement Fund is exhausted, the applicant and Union of Brunel Students’ will be advised of this.
