Top 5 Tips for Running an Effective Candidate Campaign

Thinking of running in the elections? Here are our top five tips to help you build a strong and effective campaign. You don’t have to do everything on this list, and we can’t guarantee it’ll make you win if you do — but these should give you a solid starting point!

1. Make your campaign memorable

Create a strong, recognisable brand that sticks with students. Choose an Instagram handle, slogan, hashtag, and colour theme, and use them consistently across your campaign. Keep your election banner fun and eye-catching—don’t overload it with text! At a minimum, include your name, the position you’re running for, and maybe a short, catchy slogan. Matching DIY campaign t-shirts are also a great way to stand out!

2. Make an election Instagram – it can be your biggest resource

Your campaign Instagram will be one of your most powerful tools. Keep the handle simple (e.g. @VoteEric2025) and create a hashtag (#VoteEric2025) so students can easily find and share your content. Mix fun and serious posts—let students know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should vote for you. Jump on trends, get creative, and most importantly, enjoy it! If you’re having fun, people will remember you and want to support you.

3. Make a fun campaign video

Students are far more likely to engage with quick, entertaining video content than long written documents. If you’re explaining your manifesto, don’t just sit and talk—get creative! Film in different locations that connect to your key points, add fun elements like music or animations, involve other students, or even throw in a dance if that’s your style. The more engaging and unique your video, the more people will watch it, and the more they will feel that they know you.

4. Be present and actively campaign

Yes, it can feel daunting to approach students and talk about your campaign, but the more visible you are, the better. Try a mix of different campaign tactics:

  • Be out on campus in your campaign colours.
  • Put up posters (where allowed) with your name, picture, and slogan.
  • Reach out to clubs and societies—attend their sessions and chat with members about why they should vote for you.

The more students see and recognise you, the more likely they’ll remember to vote for you.

5. Use your friends for support

Your friends can be a great support. They can help put up posters, film videos, and even bring you snacks when you’re running low on energy. They also help spread the word—encouraging their own networks to vote for you. Brunel is a connected community, and word-of-mouth can go a long way!

Most of all, enjoy it!

Elections are a fantastic experience, no matter the outcome. You’ll learn new skills, meet loads of people, and have a great time along the way. Good luck!
