"The Union of Brunel Students exists to ensure that every Brunel student has the opportunity to enjoy, challenge, influence and benefit from all aspects of their studies and the wider student experience". Today we exist as a challenging, progressive and change-focused organisation. Our Impact is measured in the work that we do on behalf and with students to improve the experience here at Brunel. Below, you can get an idea of what our impact has been recently and a regularly updated blog below where you can find out about our work throughout the year.
This year, we've been focused on our core goals as we look into the next decade and the pre-planning stages of our next Strategic Plan (2021-2026).
In September, we welcomed over 3,000 new students to Brunel from all over the world with a week long schedule of events for Freshers Week. We saw over 1,500 students sign up for our Clubs and Societies and over 8,000 attend our Freshers Fair on the Tuesday. During the entire week, we saw over 2,100 students coming to our events. Our impact was to keep students engaged and informed during the week about our work, and what we're here to do at Brunel.
In October, we launched our new BruNights Lights events where our Student Activities team organised a Basketball game between our Men's 1st's and the Unversity of West England where our club beat UWE with seconds to spare. We're bringing students more opportunities to enjoy sport without having to take part, bringing students together and showcasing our students and their skills.
In November, we learned about the upcoming General Election 2019 - We know that young people have traditionally not been engaged with traditional party politics, and comparing the number of young people who aren't registered (One in Three) with the number of older people who aren't registered (One in Six) and you can understand why the "Grey Vote" has produced responses from government over the years that don't reflect the experiences of students and young people across the UK. This time, just like in 2017, we mobilised students and staff to hand out over 5,000 Leaflets, create conversations with friends and use our communications to get students to do one simple thing - Register to vote before the 26th of November in order to vote on the 12th of December.
In 2018/19, we ran a record number of change, wellbeing and awareness campaigns including Breast Cancer Awareness, Movember, This Girl Can, Islamic Awareness Month,
This year was the first year the University gave us £200,000 in order to make Sports Clubs free, and create our new Social Sport project called "Active@Brunel" which gives students one off opportunities to get involved in Yoga, Boxercise and Pilates.
We also saw a dramatic increase in the number of students getting involved in our Societies, including the creation of 41 new groups and over 3062 people signing up!
We also invited the London Brunel International College (LBIC) to join our Student Rep Project in order to allow students to improve their learning experience and create innovative new tools and resources for students all across Brunel.
2017 was also the return of Sexual Health and Guidance Week where we informed 1,000 students about consent, contraception, STI testing.
In 2016/17, we continued into our first Academic Year with a new Rebrand and Strategic Plan. One of our biggest campaigns was to register students to vote in the Snap General Election 2017 where we registered students who then went on to vote on the 8th of June. Because this was the week after our last Mega Global, we estimate that most students voted in their home constituency.
