Here at Brunel we want to make your fresher’s week and the years to come the best of your life. We want you to make friends for life, achieve more than you thought you ever could and most importantly have fun. We are however, very realistic and we understand that for some of you the next three years may involve sex. Whether it’s your first time, or you’re well-rehearsed we want to make sure you have all the tools and knowledge to look after your body and your partners.

Free Sexual health screening through Brunel Pharmacy and the sexual health clinic at Hillingdon Hospital.

Surveys have shown that young people between 18 and 25 experience the highest rates of STI infection in the UK. There is a huge stigma around “getting checked” that we want to alleviate. Having a sexual health checkup does not mean you’re a “whore” or a “player” it simply means your conscious enough to want to protect yourself and your partner. It is advised that you receive a sexual health check every time you change sexual partners, if you have any unusual symptoms or if you are concerned you are at risk.

Free Condoms from The ARC & On-site contraception available from your GP

Condoms are the most effective way of preventing the spread of STI’s when used properly, they are however not the safest form of contraception. A hormone based contraception such as the pill, the implant or the injection are up to 99% effect but do not protect against STI’s. When both are used in conjunction with each other the effectiveness of the contraception is just shy of 100% and the risk of an STI is eliminated.

Free Sanitary Products from the Union Reception

We’re giving away free Tampons at fresher’s fayre and we’re setting up the “No vagina should bleed alone.” box in our Union Reception. We will be stocking up on sanitary products for those who can’t afford, who run out at the worst possible time or just need a helping hand once in a while. And all we ask in return is that when you have a few spares, or you’re able to give back and help another, just pop them in our donation box so we can continue to support our community when they have that emergency week.

We understand that sex, menstrual cycles and pregnancy aren’t always the most socially acceptable conversations but we want to change that. Let’s talk about sex, our bodies and sexual health and let’s promote safe and responsible practice at Brunel University.
