Unmanned Aerial System

UAS Society

What is the UAS Society?

The society is responsible for designing and constructing the Brunel University entrant for the I.Mech.E UAS challenge.

What is the I.Mech.E UAS Challenge?

The UAS challenge was first run in 2014 to provide students with an outlet to develop the practical skills required by the aerospace industry. The challenge provides an opportunity to become involved in a project that encompasses the entire development cycle required to bring a product to market starting from conceptual design and finishing with testing and pitching the product.  The system produced by the teams will be expected to take part in tests that simulate tasks the product would be required to undertake in a real world scenario. The system must complete these tasks completely autonomously.  Common tests in the competition are area search, navigating waypoints and accurately dropping payloads. The teams are scored on their system’s performance in tests and the content of the design presentation given to UAS challenge judges.

Why should I join?

The challenge is designed to simulate the process employees will need to progress through to bring a product to market. Through joining the society you can gain an incite into what will be excepted in the industry as well as developing skills in team work and communication, critical to secure graduate employment.  Participation will not only allow you to apply theory learnt in lectures to live projects but also gain essential practical skills. The society will also give you the chance to network with like minded students, future employers and leading professional in aerospace engineering and flight safety.

What can I get involved with?

Depending on your interests you can be involved with.....

  • Construction of the aircraft
  • Computational fluid dynamics analysis
  • Aircraft Structure analysis and design
  • Conceptual design of the aircraft
  • Control system Programming and design

What if I am not an engineer?

The society will also need members to help with...

  • Graphic design
  • Business Presentation
  • Market research
  • S.T.E.M Presentations
