Hello and welcome to the Games Workshop and Warhammer Society at Brunel! We are students with an avid love for the hobby and all things miniatures whether it be playing tabletop games, painting or simply discussing the lore and setting. If you are a veteran collector, pro painter, Black library guzzler or just someone who has a vague interest in the hobby then join us for weekly society nights to geek out over the hobby. We aim to create a fun, social society where people can play games against other members on a weekly basis or just hang out and do some miniature painting together.
Who we are:
Chairman - Harry: Has been collecting his beloved Blood Axe 40k Orks for nearly 10 years and really enjoys the painting process in bringing the models to life. Still rubbish at the game.
Finance Officer - Theo: A Black Templars and Imperium fan who has got good knowledge despite only getting into the hobby fairly recently. Likes big guns, 3d printing and mowing down Orks. Dislikes Psykers.
Social Secretary - Seb: Our resident extrovert and a fan of the noble Grey Knights. He also recently got into the hobby, a semi-experienced painter bringing his DnD painting skills over to 40k and some much needed charm to balance us out.
Membership Cost
We discussed at length whether the Society should be free membership as many other societies are and we would obviously like it be free however we felt that as we are a new society with limited funding, that to make it really shine and last the test of time for future students that we would charge a small fee to help supply the society to get up and running with equipment to efficiently run game nights as well as provide the means for people to get into the hobby. Unfortunately Games Workshop and the like is not a cheap pastime and without some modest funds we would be funding a lot of the items (such as rule books, dice, painting tools, terrain etc etc) out of our own pocket so while we were loathe to do so, we felt that £5 was reasonable as an entry price. We will discuss as a committee whether we can scrap it all together for next year as we will be more established but it wasn’t viable to start the society without some extra funding apart from the modest amount provided by Brunel.
Other Committee positions:
As we are a recently formed society there will be a few positions available for any members who are interested via casting a vote for applicants and we welcome anyone who wishes to apply - you don’t need to be an old hand at the hobby or even have experience of being on a committee before however the position does come with a few responsibilities so only apply if you are genuinely interested and willing to have the commitment (but it’s great for things like your CV and learning new skills!). The positions available are:
- Vice Chair -
- Webpage and Social Media Secretary -
- Discord Moderator -
Planned events for the year:
- A trip to Warhammer World in Nottingham - Currently we do not have a set date for this but hope to arrange a day trip on weekend during the 2nd semester of term but this may be subject to change so keep an eye out for announcements. Transport will be provided via a minibus so places will be limited. There will also be a small fee to cover the cost of petrol but the experience would be well worth it as the display tables are fantastic and certain goods can only be acquired at Warhammer world.
- Tournaments for both Age of Sigmar (AoS) and Warhammer 40k - Depending on how many students join the society we would look to host tournaments for both AoS and 40k.
- Social events @ Brunel Student Union - Seb will be arranging dates for members to meet up and get to know other members of the community and discuss all things Warhammer.
- Casual Painting and Scrap Terrain Building Competition - Aiming to create something fun for society members to work on over the course of a semester/ year such as creating some tabletop terrain out of recyclable trash and having a casual competition between members for an in-house painting competition as judged by the committee members.
Time and Place
To be anounced - As a new society we will need to gauge what is best suited in terms of the society numbers we get and what room would best suit the purpose but we hope to run it during the evening on the weekend (most likely Saturday) at one of the rooms in the Isambard complex.
If the above sounds interesting then look for our stall during freshers week or for more particular questions then email Harry - 2432434@brunel.ac.uk
