WHO ARE WE?
Part business, part charity, part membership body – students’ unions are all seriously fun places to work. They are organisations in their own right. Professionally run, but different. Professional teams support elected student leaders so as they make change, improve lives and fulfil potential, we help make it happen.
The Union of Brunel Students has a small but impactful staff team dedicated to serving the needs and interests of our members. Our size allows us to work closely together and make decisions quickly, while our passion for creating positive change means that every member of our team has an impact on helping us deliver our vision to ensure that every student thrives at Brunel.
We are one of more than 600 students’ unions across the country. And with more than 15,000 members, 150 clubs and societies, a huge range of services and a bold strategy, we’re one of the most exciting.
WHAT’S THE JOB?
The Union requires an experienced Supervisor to help us deliver our bar and catering activity within our 600-capacity nightclub and 780-capacity bar. As part of the Venues Team, you will report to and work closely with the Head of Commercial Operations to hit key KPIs and implement department strategy relating to the operation of the Venues. You will also act as a Duty Manager as required, and provide direction and supervision to causal staff in the commercial team, ensuring they are correctly trained, and that resources are correctly allocated.
The role ensures a safe, fun environment for our diverse membership by the efficient running of Bar and Catering to agreed high standards of service. Particular attention is paid to maximising footfall, driving revenue and profit margin, and always operating within the framework, legislation and spirit of licensing laws, the Union policies and health and safety regulations. This remit is focused heavily on the commercial trade, and the daily operations of that trade.
WHO YOU ARE:
The successful candidate will need to be a confident self-starter with the energy and enthusiasm to deliver to a diverse membership in a fast-paced youth orientated environment. They will have a proven track record in supervising multiple commercial operations within the hospitality sector. The ideal candidate should also demonstrate experience working with KPIs, particularly in managing budgets, financial procedures, and effectively controlling stock and labour costs. Technical knowledge in Audio-Visual setup and operation within a hospitality context is essential.
Leading by example, the ideal candidate must serve as a good role model for staff, embodying the values of a student union. A team player with a genuine desire to work within an organisation catering to a culturally diverse membership is essential. The candidate should possess strong communication skills, flexibility to cope under pressure, and adaptability to changing priorities. Additionally, they should demonstrate an ability to train and develop a team of staff, and excel in evaluation and problem-solving.
A solid understanding of licensing objectives, catering and food safety, health and safety legislation, as well as familiarity with event safety and Security Industry Authority guidelines, is highly advantageous. The ability to be a personal license holder is a required qualification for this role.
