There is funding available from the University and the Union for students struggling with money. Home and International students on full-time or part-time courses are eligible.

The University

The university offers two types of funding for students experiencing unexpected financial hardship during their studies:

Hardship Fund

  • This provides help in times of unexpected need but cannot be a long-term source of support

  • The University should communicate their decision to you via eVision within 28 days of you submitting all documents

  • Note, first year students in Term 1 are not eligible for this fund

Emergency Loans

  • Repayable loan of £50 - 200

  • No interest will be charged on this emergency loan

The Union

Our funds are currently closed and will reopen towards the end of 2024.

We offer two type of funding for students experiencing severe financial difficulty, affecting their daily expenses:

Hardship Fund

  • Be a registered Brunel student

  • Maximum award of £500, and students cannot receive more than £1000 across their time at Brunel

  • We will get back to you in 5 working days from when we receive all the application and evidence documents

  • Requires 3-months worth of bank statements

Emergency Fund

  • Be a registered Brunel student

  • Maximum award of £300 and students cannot receive more than £600 across their time at Brunel

  • We will get back to you in 3 working days from when we receive all the application and evidence documents

  • Requires previous month's bank statement

These funds are designed only to provide temporary, short-term financial support, rather than long-term help. They are supported by a contribution from the Brunel University Alumni. Our aim is to make a difference in students’ lives and help you continue with your studies.

Bereavement Fund - Working Partnership

The Union has a working partnership with Making Mum Proud, a charity which offers financial support for students 18 - 26 years old who have lost a parent or legal guardian.

They offer support towards student expenses such as tuition fees, course resources, accommodation costs and utility bills.

  • The award is between £50 - £250

  • Complete applications are considered in 5-7 working days

  • Decisions are communicated to students within 10 working days of submitting a complete application form.

  • If successful, the amount awarded is final and cannot be appealed

  • Students can only make one application for financial support each academic year

Application criteria:

  • Be a registered Brunel Student (not in abeyance or in appeal process)

  • Demonstrate the loss of a parent or legal guardian while studying at Brunel University

  • Provide evidence of financial hardship

    • Original documents e.g, free arrears letter from bursary, resources (copy of course list/estimate for repair), accommodation costs letter from landlord, utility bills from suppliers

The Union facilitates applications for the Bereavement Fund. We will provide an application form, and manage your application with Making Mum Proud.

If you want to apply, please send us an email at advice@brunel.ac.uk

Fee Remission

In very exceptional circumstances the university may offer a fee remission, if students experience a serious and sudden change in their financial situation during their course.

This means that, when starting your course, you were confident in your ability to pay your fees but, are no longer able to do so. The maximum remission available is 80% of the outstanding fees.

You will need to meet certain criteria, of which here are some – but not all:

  • Be fully enrolled and if required have a valid CAS or visa from the University

  • Demonstrate you have made every reasonable effort to meet your fees from other sources, e.g., evidence of completing, or actively seeking paid part-time work

  • A single remission of fees should be sufficient to permit you to complete your programme without further financial support from the University

  • Have adhered to the Student Code of Conduct throughout your programme, and engaged with your studies

The University will not normally consider currency fluctuations as valid reasons for sudden changes.

You will need to complete and send your application with evidence within the application window, this closes 2 weeks prior to the panel date. You can find the full list of Panel dates for 2024/25, and all the criteria on the Fee Remission Application Information.
