Sign up to become a Freshers Volunteer!

As a Freshers Helper, you will play a crucial role in welcoming and supporting new students at Brunel University. Your main responsibility is to support the running of various activities and help build a vibrant and inclusive community on campus.

You will assist with setting up, packing down, and hosting events and workshops, with around 3-5 events per day requiring help with organisation, session setup, or maintaining high energy to encourage social interaction among students. Additionally, you will promote the fresher’s timetable by handing out leaflets, engaging with students at events, and speaking to groups in lecture theatres during their first week of induction. You will also help prepare free items distributed to freshers in the initial weeks, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

This is a Volunteer position that is unpaid but comes with great perks (listed below).

Perks of Volunteering

  • As a volunteer for Union of Brunel students, you will receive 3 weeks’ worth of Venue nights out for free (Including a free Freshers ball ticket).
  • A free coffee a day, courtesy of Locos bar, for the duration of your two weeks volunteering.
  • A free T-shirt.
  • A detailed LinkedIn Recommendation provided directly by your manager, detailing all the support you provided to the Union during your volunteering; along with opportunity to use us as a reference for future job applications.
  • A goodie bag of fresher’s freebies to keep you fuelled up! Not to mention the opportunity to try all the activities we run yourself (free of charge)!
  • You will be an intricate part of the delivery of our 2024 Freshers programme and have the opportunity to meet hundreds of new students and support them with making friends. This is a great opportunity to not only meet new people but build your interpersonal skills for future job opportunities and work within events.

Responsibilities and requirements of this role

Expected hours/shifts

  • Between the 19th – 20th we may ask you to attend an introductory session to collect your ‘Perks’, explain how the next few weeks will work and put together some final preparations for Freshers.
  • During 22nd – 29th we would require you to be available for allocated shifts, two of which will include night shifts where you will support new freshers by walking them to the entrance of their accommodation following nights out as a ‘Sober volunteer’. Most Day shifts will take place between the hours of 11am -5pm. You will not be required to work every day but we do expect you to be available across this period for us to allocate shifts equally amongst all 10 volunteers.
  • During the 30th – 6th October, we will allocate 2-3 daytime shifts based around your availability with lectures.
  • We have provided the additional 3rd week of free events as a perk to account for the two nights out of entry you would miss during ‘Sober duty’.
  • All volunteers will be required to support the Freshers Fair on Tuesday 24th September; however, this will be a split shift to allow you time to visit the fair yourselves.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliable and punctual with a proactive approach to tasks.
