Uni Survival: Top 5 Tips from Your Advice Service

Top 5 Tips from the Union Advice Service
Starting university is a whirlwind—exciting, a little nerve-wracking, and full of new experiences. But don’t worry, your Student Union’s got your back! Our Advice Service is here to make your transition smoother. Check out our top 5 tips to help you settle into uni life with confidence.

Tip 1: Speak up about Extenuating Circumstances (ECs)
Life can throw curveballs, and sometimes, those deadlines or exams just aren’t going to happen. If that’s the case, make sure to let the University know ASAP. They’ve got an Extenuating Circumstances and Coursework Extension Policy in place to help you out. Don’t let things pile up—communicating early can save you a lot of stress! Find more info here.

Tip 2: Avoid Academic Misconduct Drama
Plagiarism, contract cheating, or using AI tools like ChatGPT the wrong way—it’s not worth it. Seriously, the last thing you want is an email accusing you of academic misconduct. Learn the dos and don’ts, and if you’re struggling, it’s okay to reach out for support. You can also ask for counselling if things get overwhelming. Check out info here.

Tip 3: Money Woes? Get Help Early
If you’re having trouble with tuition, rent, or bills, don’t wait! Reach out for support as soon as you can. Whether it’s the University Hardship Fund or getting advice on budgeting, there’s help available. No shame in asking for support when you need it. Money tips here.

Tip 4: Get Your Student Support Profile Sorted
If you’ve got a long-term condition like dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, or a physical condition, make sure you’ve got a Student Support Profile set up. This means you’ll have the right support in place, like extra exam time or extra breaks. Contact the Student Support and Welfare Team to get started—better to have everything sorted early. You can either visit them in Howell Building during the opening hours, give them a call on +44 (0)1895 267045 or email them.
