University life can be a big adjustment, and it’s natural to encounter challenges, but there are plenty of support services available to help you along the way. Whether you’re looking for guidance on campus or seeking help in the local area, there are professionals and spaces designed to support your mental and emotional wellbeing. Take a look below for an overview of the resources available at the University and in the community.

On Campus

The University and Student Union have several sources of support including professionals you can speak with about any difficulties you are facing. There are dedicated spaces for you to take some time out and calm your mind.

Student Support & Welfare Team

About

The Student Support and Welfare Team provide support and guidance on personal, welfare and financial issues. They are here to discuss any struggles you’ve had, managing learning difficulties or medical conditions and share how you’ve been feeling. They offer support such as:

  • Group Workshops

  • Short term 1-1 Counselling

  • Applying for the Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA)

  • Creating registered support profiles for:

Specific Learning Difficulties (e.g., dyslexia and ADHD)

Mental Health Conditions (e.g., anxiety and depression)

Medical Conditions (e.g., epilepsy and arthritis)

      Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

The team also respond to support requests raised, either for yourself or someone you are worried about via Report & Support - either anonymously or with contact information.

It is important to make the university aware about any problems you are dealing with and access professional support. Particularly, to submit ECs and discussing how your circumstances may affect your academic performance and progress.

Private Therapy

About

Private therapy offers regular appointments with a qualified therapist to talk about how you’re feeling, what you’re thinking and work through your difficulties with a dedicated professional. Often, people choose therapy for specific issues such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, OCD, eating difficulties, PTSD and many others.

The benefits of private therapy are that you can choose what type of therapy you’d like, where it is, who your therapist is and what they specialise in. You can be as creative and selective as you like and compared to free therapies, you can often avoid waiting lists. Many therapists offer student rates making it more affordable.
