Assessment Season: How to Get Support Through ECs and Extensions

Assessment season can be one of the most intense times of the academic year. Deadlines stack up, pressure rises, and life doesn’t always cooperate with your schedule. If you find yourself struggling, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to push through without support. The university offers two key safety nets to help you manage unexpected challenges: Exceptional Circumstances (ECs) and Coursework Extensions.

What Are Exceptional Circumstances (ECs)?

Exceptional Circumstances are serious, unexpected events outside your control that affect your ability to complete an assessment or perform to your usual standard. This could include illness, personal emergencies, or other significant disruptions.

You can request ECs for exams, live assessments, and coursework. To qualify, the situation must be unavoidable, unexpected, and genuinely beyond your control.

Key things to know:

  • Apply as soon as possible, and no later than 10 working days after the assessment deadline.

  • Submit your request through eVision.

  • No evidence is required to apply.

  • ECs don’t remove the assessment—you will still need to complete it later.

What About Coursework Extensions?

If your issue only affects coursework (not exams or live assessments), an extension may be the better option.

Here’s how extensions work:

  • They apply only to coursework.

  • If approved, you’ll receive up to 5 extra working days, or 14 calendar days for larger projects like dissertations or final-year projects.

  • You must apply via eVision at least 48 hours before the original deadline.

  • If your extension request is rejected, you can still apply for ECs.
