EGM Results Are In—Here’s What You Need to Know!
First off, a massive thank you to everyone who joined us for last night’s Emergency General Meeting (EGM). Over 100 of you showed up, representing more than 50 clubs and societies—everything from Table Tennis to Italian Society, Hockey to Sylheti Society. We also had senior reps, course reps, postgrads, and undergrads. It was a fantastic reflection of Brunel’s diverse and vibrant community, and we couldn’t be prouder.
What Happened?
The EGM was called to vote on a motion to change the officer structure, aiming to better represent your views and make it easier for more students to get involved. This includes:
-
More paid part-time roles
-
Flexible networks you can dip in and out of
-
A revamped election process to make things less intimidating
-
Full-time officer posts that will no longer be college-based but will instead represent specific portfolios; Academic Outcomes, Community and Belonging, and Diversity and Inclusion.
The Results
Here’s how it went down:
-
117 votes cast – amazing turnout, which means we hit quoracy (thank you!).
-
66 voted in favour of change (56%) – the majority backed the new structure.
However, the motion required a two-thirds majority to pass. This means, for now, the proposed changes won’t move forward.
What’s Next?
While the motion didn’t pass, the clear majority in favour gives us a strong mandate to keep working on this.
Our Student Voice Manager, Maria Bamgbele, said it best:
“Although we didn’t quite hit the majority needed, we’re thrilled so many students turned up to debate this important change. The support for the new structure is a great foundation, and we’re excited to refine it further with your input.”
We’ll be reaching out to everyone who attended to gather feedback on how we can tweak the proposal to work for more students. Keep an eye on your inbox—we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Prize Time 🎉
As a thank-you for your time, we held a prize draw for attendees with a £100 GiftPay card for the winner, and 2x £50 runner up prizes. The winners will be contacted today, congratulations!
Thanks again to everyone who made the EGM such a success. We’re excited about the future of representation at Brunel and can’t wait to work with you to make it even better.
