Nafee Khan: My First Weeks as Student Activities President

I officially started my role as Student Activities President on 7th July, and it has already been a busy and exciting journey.

In my first week, I settled into the role with compliance training, met the council, and attended my first council meeting. I also began building relationships across different university departments.

From mid-July, the focus quickly shifted to Freshers planning. I initiated the idea of launching Brunel Cup: Valorant, a gaming tournament in The Venue, which I hope will grow into something big for Brunel’s esports scene. Alongside this, I’ve been working to make club trainings more accessible outside lecture hours, and I set up a WhatsApp broadcast channel for all Brunel students to share feedback easily.

These weeks also gave me opportunities to represent Brunel externally, at the BUCS Conference in Hull, where I networked with other officers and gained great ideas, and at the NUS Lead and Change Conference in Birmingham, where I not only developed my leadership skills but also lobbied with other international officers to push back against the government’s changes to the Graduate Route Visa. I’ve also completed leadership training, trustee planning, and finance training, all of which will help me deliver more for students.

A big highlight was joining the graduation ceremonies on the podium and meeting new students during Clearing Day, where I proudly represented our union.

Most recently, I’ve been focused on organising the Valorant tournament, working with the Games Design department, events, and venue teams to sort out technical details. I’ve also been pushing for better food options on campus with Chartwells, and planning a campaign video around tackling harassment and sexual misconduct. On top of that, I’ve begun work on introducing a flag pole outside our Union, so that students from different countries can hoist their national flag on independence days, something that will add a meaningful and inclusive touch to campus life.

It’s been a packed start, but one full of learning, connections, and exciting plans. I can’t wait to see everything come to life this September at Freshers and beyond!
