Nafee's Blog: From Freshers to Brunel’s Biggest Gaming Event

Since my last blog, things have moved at full speed, and it’s been an incredible journey!

A huge part of my focus has been on Freshers Week. I’m really proud to say that I was behind bringing the F1 simulator to BZ Square, which turned out to be a massive hit. Later, we set it up again in the Union tent during Freshers Fair, and it brought in even more students eager to try it out. During Freshers Fair, I also had the chance to meet our local MP, Danny Beales. We spoke about one of my main objectives this year improving elections on campus, especially for clubs and societies and I’m glad to say he agreed to meet with me to continue the conversation.

Last month, I also had my first Assembly meeting, where I worked closely with Chartwells. I’ve been focusing on making sure our catering contract works better for students, including:
• Exploring the option for clubs and societies to use external caterers when needed.
• Setting up a Community Fridge so that near-expiry products can be shared with students directly instead of going to waste.

Alongside this, I’ve been supporting cultural and social events like the Garba night, and I’m also preparing to expand the Brunel Cup to include cricket, football, futsal, badminton, tennis, and basketball.

But without a doubt, my proudest moment so far has been hosting Brunel’s biggest gaming event ever the Brunel Cup: Valorant (Season 1). On 25–26 September, after more than a month of planning, I finally saw it come to life. We had 5 teams, over 30 players, and 100+ spectators across two days of competition. The energy in the room was incredible from the qualifiers on Day 1 to the finals on Day 2, where we crowned our very first Brunel Valorant Champions.

I organised this event almost single-handedly, supported by 4 fantastic volunteers and with help from the Games Design Department, Information Security, IT Services and Networks,. It was truly a team effort, and seeing it all come together was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had so far.

The Brunel Cup: Valorant has now firmly established itself as the foundation of Brunel’s esports future, and I am already working on how to build on this success in the months ahead.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep pushing forward with projects that make student life better whether that’s through esports, elections, catering, or cultural events. Freshers was just the beginning, and I can’t wait to share what’s coming next!
