Nafee's Blog: The Launch of Brunel Cup!

Student Activities President Blog

I’d like to give a brief update on the projects I am currently working on as Student Activities President.

Brunel Cup

The Brunel Cup launched last week, and I have been leading on its delivery, working closely with the Student Activities team. This is something I committed to in my manifesto pledge, and I am incredibly excited about it and very proud of what we have achieved so far.

The Brunel Cup offers a brand-new set of free, on-campus sports leagues open to all Brunel students. It is designed to make competitive sport easier to get involved in. There is no travel, no training commitments, and no cost to enter. Students simply sign up, receive a fixture, and play weekly against other Brunel teams on campus.

We are now approaching almost 300 sign-ups, which is fantastic to see. Basketball, futsal, and football are already proving to be a huge success, with strong participation and great energy in Week 1. You can check out the Week 1 score sheets on our Instagram to keep up with the results (@pofficialteambrunel).

Leagues are available across five sports:

  • Football (5-a-side)
  • Futsal
  • Basketball (3v3)
  • Tennis
  • Badminton

The focus is on enjoyable competition that fits around lectures, work, and other commitments, without the pressure of external leagues or long travel days. The Brunel Cup is a great option if you:

  • want regular sport without a big-time commitment
  • enjoy competition in a more relaxed setting
  • want to play sport on campus with other Brunel students

Gaming Corner

Following the success of the gaming tournament in Semester 1, and in response to student feedback asking for more opportunities to socialise on campus, I am creating a Gaming Corner in Locos.

I am working in collaboration with Rhys Lockhart, Sub TV, and several staff members, and the Gaming Corner will be ready by the end of this week.

This will be a dedicated space for students to game, socialise, and enjoy some downtime in a comfortable setting. If you are interested in learning more, please feel free to speak to me directly.

Fundraising

A key objective of the Union this year is to create more opportunities for fundraising, with funding being cut, fundraising is going to be essential moving forward to enable the activities that we offer.

To work towards this, I’ve set up all logistics for the Team Brunel £1 Chai fundraising initiative, which is scheduled to launch in the coming week.

A regular stall, offering Chai at an affordable price will be available over the coming weeks.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is a basic right, and connectivity is vital to create an environment where we feel connected.

I have been actively involved in supporting Darren O’Connor with Wi-Fi testing, helping to increase student involvement and strengthen testing across campus.

Holi

As part of our One Brunel schedule, I have been working with the Student Activities team to bring you another celebration for Holi. Holi is always an enjoyable event on campus. Holi is a vibrant Hindu festival known as the "Festival of Colours," celebrating spring, love, and the victory of good over evil.

One Brunel is all about celebrating the unique mix of cultures and people that make our campus amazing. It’s more than just events, it’s a movement that brings us together, embracing our diversity and building connections across cultures. I cannot wait to see you all there!
