A dominant display saw Brunel University’s Women’s Rugby Union 1st team secure their place in BUCS Super Rugby (BSR), for the first time in their history, defeating Newcastle 64-8 in the BSR North vs South Prem Playoff.
The victory not only sealed Brunel’s promotion to the top tier of British University rugby, but also crowned an extraordinary season for the team. They dominated their league campaign with a perfect record, winning all 9 of their league matches and finishing with an impressive points difference of +511.
Their supremacy throughout the league season gave them the favourites tag going into the playoff match, and they didn’t disappoint, taking control from minute one. They lead from the start and pushed on to go in at half time with a 43-4 lead. They never looked back from this point and continued to control the game, to take a comprehensive 64-8 victory.
Brunel women’s head coach, Abi Burton, was beaming with pride at the result, saying “I’m overpowered with how proud I am of the girls. Nothing can describe the gruelling sessions that we’ve been putting in week in week out, and to finally see them actually pay off, I couldn’t be any prouder of them.”
The victory may have secured the team’s spot in the prestigious BSR league for the first time, but they aren’t resting on their laurels, with the Women's National Vase on the horizon. They take on Northumbria 1sts in the opening round next Wednesday and will look to carry their winning momentum forward and add more silverware to the collection.
