Academic Support with EC's

Assessment season can be one of the most intense times of the academic year. Deadlines stack up, pressure rises, and life doesn’t always cooperate with your schedule. If you find yourself struggling, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to push through without support. The university offers two key safety nets to help you manage unexpected challenges: Exceptional Circumstances (ECs) and Coursework Extensions.

The Union Advice Service (UAS) offers free, confidential support to guide you through the process. They can help with:

  • Completing your EC application

  • Reviewing your statement and any evidence

  • Advice on late EC submissions

  • Support with appeals

  • Answering any questions about ECs or extensions

Click here for more information about EC's.

Accommodation Prices frozen for 26/27

The University has agreed to freeze on-campus accommodation prices for the 2026/2027 academic year, meaning there will be no price increase this September or for the next 12 months. This is the first time in over 35 years that accommodation prices haven’t gone up.

This price freeze is the result of student feedback. It shows what can happen when students speak up and the Union works on your behalf. Your voices were heard, and the Union made sure they were represented in the rooms where decisions are made.

December Reps of the Month

Nermine Aliji Ademi = Academic Course Rep of the Month

Arabella Bateson = Senior Rep of the Month

"Nermine successfully advocated for students on the Regional Human Rights Systems module, securing approval for exam questions to be released three days in advance rather than 24 hours. She also raised concerns around transparency of assessment expectations, late or missing reading lists, heavy workloads, and difficulties changing optional modules.

Arabella raised significant course-level issues affecting Finance and Accounting students, particularly the lack of optional module choice due to staff redundancies and progression issues between Research Methods and Econometrics. She highlighted how students were required to take advanced econometrics without sufficient prior preparation, leading to confusion and late, difficult module switches."
