After a tough season in the Premier South Eastern, the Futsal Men’s 1sts were looking to end the season on a high by reaching their 3rd straight BUCS Championship Final. After finishing 3rd in their league, and beating Cardiff 6-3 (AET) in a playoff match to ensure they reached the finals, the boys were confident of causing an upset. A small matter of a 5 hour drive to reach Northumbria Sport Central, and 3 matches in just over 24 hours, is what awaited them.

Futsal were drawn in a group of Loughborough 1sts (2nd in Premier Midlands), Nottingham Trent 1sts (1st in Premier Midlands) & Bournemouth 1sts (1st in Premier Western) and to reach the final was never going to be an easy task against two Premier Division winners. Their first match was against Nottingham Trent and after an incredibly tense match it finished 5-5. The game then went to penalties where the Brunel boys triumphed 2-0. As their only game of the day this allowed them some rest and relaxation before the final two matches on Sunday (Loughborough had beaten Bournemouth 5-2 in the other match).

On Sunday, Brunel kicked things off against Bournemouth, knowing a win would all but secure their place in the finals. In what BUCSSport described as ‘an incredible end to end game’ the boys were unfortunately edged out 6-5 by Bournemouth, whilst Loughborough beat Nottingham Trent 6-4. This left everything in the balance as to reach the final now would take a big win against Loughborough and results to go their way. Despite a fantastic last win, ending 8-4 to Brunel, Bournemouth’s 16-5 win over Nottingham Trent meant they just pipped the team to the final place and a chance to play at St. George's Park in the final round.

After this final match, the team thanked their leavers for the effort that they had put during their time at University as they look forward to restarting the season in September.
