English Universities beat Scottish and Welsh Universities to win gold at the BUCS Home Nations Tournament 2017.
Darcy Alexander reports from the Home Nations 2017, where Team Brunel was represented by Emily Chow and herself, both members of Brunel Hockey.
'Held at Edinburgh’s Peffermill Playing Fields, Emily Chow and I had an amazing experience representing England and Brunel.
We travelled on Monday morning to Leeds for a training session with the team before the tournament, however Virgin’s East Coast Trains had suffered a meltdown and we ended up staying on the train all the way to Edinburgh, missing training and having to call on friends to see if anyone had a place for us to stay! Fortunately a friend of a friend had a spare room and was able to put Emily and me up for the night.
On Tuesday we had a great training session with the team to prepare to take on Wales the next day!
On Wednesday we won 3-1. Wales were missing a lot of their first team players due to Welsh International commitments so it wasn’t a huge fight, but the sun was shining and it was a good win to steal. That evening we had a social with the Men’s English Universities Hockey team, where we made use of the hotel’s pool facilities and celebrated one of the girls birthday’s with chocolate cake (an athlete’s diet!)
On Thursday we had an early start with breakfast at 7am, training at 9am and then facing Scotland in the afternoon. It was a battle and we were under pressure at times but we took an early lead and finished the game 2-1!
These results meant that England ended up as the winners of the Women's Hockey Home Nations 2017! England narrowly missed out on the overall title, culminating 13 points to Scotland's 15.
Thanks to the Union for supporting Emily and I, it was a real honour to represent Brunel on a national stage!'
