Active@Brunel & Free Club Membership Shortlisted for National Award

We are delighted to announce that Active@Brunel and our Free Club Membership initiative has been shortlisted for the Sport Participation Programme of the year award, at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Awards. The Sport Participation Programme award recognises an institution that has actively developed a sport and physical activity participation programme or number of programmes throughout the year, providing their students/staff/community with outstanding new participation opportunities.

Having launched Active@Brunel in September 2017, to support the introduction of free club memberships, we have seen a 34% increase in Union Sport members this year. Our Active@Brunel programme offers students and staff the opportunity to take part in a weekly programme of activity, on campus, with no commitment, for a cost of just £33 per year. The activities on offer are extensive, ranging from yoga, to salsa to Tagged rugby and boxercise. 83% of those taking part in an active@brunel session said that it had helped them to feel less stressed, and 67% said that it had made them feel better about themselves.

On hearing about the award, Matt Newman, the Union’s Active@Brunel Coordinator (and Sport Science placement student), said the following; We couldn’t have asked for a better end to the first year of the Active@Brunel programme, it is great to see everyone’s effort being recognised on a national scale. For this nomination we owe massive thanks to all of our staff and students who have got behind the programme and have got active! Vice President Student Activities, Dev Aditya, states; The journey of building Active@Brunel was a challenge from the start and I could not be happier with the results we have been able to get this year. Looking forward to hearing about even better results from September and a big shout out to the team! Active@Brunel program was immensely exciting and I could not be happier with the results we have been able to get this year. Looking forward to hearing about even better results from September 2018 and a big shout out to the entire team who made it such a massive success!

The award winner will be announced at the BUCS Award ceremony on the 12th July. The other shortlisted nominees are the University of Warwick and the University of Hertfordshire.

Active@Brunel will be back bigger than ever next year, with another exciting programme of activities including some old favourites, and some new sessions as well. Keep following Active@Brunel on social media to stay up to date with what is on offer.
