Job Vacancies at the Union!

We employ over 70 student staff members every year in our Bar, Nightclub & at our Reception!

Our Union runs Loco’s Bar and The Venue here at Brunel University London - We run these venues as both a social environment for students to enjoy, including our Clubs & Societies and also as a revenue stream to help fund our services and activities, such as your academic representation & student experience.

This year will be challenging, but working in our Bar and Restaurant will be a highly rewarding opportunity. You’ll have the opportunities to serve food, pour drinks and become a trained Starbucks Barista. All whilst working as part of a team. We’ll continue to keep you informed about our plans this year to operate venues that are safe for our members, with enhanced cleaning and new processes.

You may also be interested in working as part of our reception team? As the front face of the Union of Brunel Students, the reception desk is a high-profile environment. It is essential, therefore, that reception is efficient, helpful, friendly, and responsive. Working in our reception will give you the experience of working in both an administration and retail role, as you will also be responsible for maintaining our retail environment and facilitating sales.

We’re looking for passionate, flexible & hard-working staff who are looking to work in a customer-focused environment.

Salary
The rate of pay is per hour, and has two bands - each band has it’s own specific role and responsibilities and we can talk to you more about this during the recruitment process.


AG1 - £9.40 per hour
AG3 - £9.90 per hour

 

Shift Patterns

All team members are required to work a variety of daytime, evening, late nights and early morning shifts over the seven day week and must be available for weekends. However, our shift patterns are flexible and we’ll do all we reasonably can to support you during your studies and exams. 

All successful applicants are required to work the last two Mega Global events of the year, along with attending mandatory and compulsory training. (A failure to complete mandatory training will result in your job offer being withdrawn). Please note that any job offer is on the condition that you pass all right to work checks.

Bar Staff and Venues Job Desription and Person Spec

Responsible To: Duty Manager - Grade: AG1 - Hours of Work: Zero-hours (Expected to be available to work minimum 2-4 shifts per week)

Job Function: The main purpose of this job is to ensure the customer receives the highest quality of services. 

  • To serve all customers in a fast, professional and courteous manner.

  • To ensure the customer receives a high standard of customer service.

  • To maintain work areas and storage areas to a high standard of cleanliness, paying particular attention to Health and Safety guidelines.

  • To assist in the checking of members’ ID when necessary.

  • To ensure that all front of house areas are kept clean and clear of litter at all times and portray the Union in a professional manner.

  • To assist in maintaining stock levels and stock rotation behind bars and within storage areas, notifying your direct supervisor of any concerns.

  • To inform the Line Manager of any absence in line with procedure stated in the contract.

  • Bring to the attention of your manager any comments reported to you by the customers.

  • To be aware of and observe laws relating to licensing and have knowledge of the policies of the Union.

  • To ensure all purchases are recorded through the appropriate EPOS systems using the procedure shown.

Reception Staff Job Description and Person Spec

Duties

Responsible To: Head of Commercial Operations - Grade: AG1 - Hours of Work: Zero-hours (Expected to be available to work minimum 2-4 shifts per week)

Job function: The purpose of the role is to provide switchboard, reception, and administration services ensuring the highest standard of customer care to the visitors, elected officers, and staff of the Union. This role will also maintain a retail environment and facilitate sales from the student Union shop which is located within reception.

RECEPTION AND SHOP

  • Deal with general enquiries from students and others at Reception and provide information or direction ensuring that official visitors waiting for a particular person/department are welcomed appropriately.
  • Operate the switchboard, redirect calls as necessary and take messages, ensuring calls are answered promptly and courteously.
  • Operate a cash float and deal with daily sales transactions (including ticket sales) as agreed.  Make provision for cashing up daily, reconciling sales and ensuring ticket numbers, floats and takings are correct, identifying and reporting any discrepancies to your line manager. Ensure that funds are transferred to the Finance Office at a time agreed with line manager.
  • Make provision for the sorting and distribution of incoming and outgoing mail at the agreed times, liaising with university as necessary.
  • Facilitate the distribution of such stock as is delivered to Reception, including any kit orders, as agreed.
  • Ensure that the reception area is clean, tidy, and welcoming at all times.
  • Maintain and facilitate Atrium and meeting room bookings. Ensure that all tables are returned and stored before closure of reception.
  • Maintain a retail environment to facilitate the sale of branded items. These include BUL crested clothing and gifts plus Team Brunel sportswear.
  • Support the line manager with retail sales events outside of the reception space, for example, at Freshers Fair and Graduation.
  • Ensure that reception equipment faults are reported to the supplier (or other appropriate person) liaising with Line Manager when necessary.
  • Co-ordinate the ordering and distribution of stationery for all union departments and act as authorised signatory on internal transfers. Ensure that stocks are maintained throughout the year and in accordance with Union policy.
  • Implement and maintain such administrative and filing systems as assist the Unions work within reception, liaising with other union staff as necessary.
