We are proud to announce that we won the coveted award for International Students Campaign of the Year at last weeks NUS International Students Awards 2018 for our South Asian Cultural Awareness Week.
January's South Asian Cultural Awareness Week was a vibrant and successful student led campaign, aiming to educate and inspire the Brunel student body on South Asian festivals and sense of community. Our two pinnacle events were the immensely popular Langar and Jash'n. In between these events we held markets, cinema screenings and debates around South Asian culture.
Langar saw the raising of a marquee especially, where our societies and community provided authentic and free food to over 600 students, all of whom were invited to enjoy their vegetarian food in a traditional experience within the marquee. Guests were invited to remove their shoes and sit with each other and talk, encouraging the sense of community and friendship alongside heartfelt food which Langar embodies.
The finale of the week was our Jash'n ball, attended en masse by our society members. An evening to encompass culture was enjoyed by all who attended, with food and entertainment to match.
Yinbo Yu, NUS International Students Officer, had this to say on the campaign: We are delighted to award the Union of Brunel students with the international student campaign of the year award at this years NUS international student conference. The work done to engage students from the international community was excellent and really encouraging to see.
We are already looking forward to bringing this event again to Brunel in 2019. The success of this must be thanked to Brunel University Sri Lankan Society, Brunel Sikh Society, Brunel Tamil Society, Brunel Desi Society, Brunel Bangladeshi Society, Brunel Indian Society, and the Union staff.
