Win Wednesday: Benefit Tribunal and Financial Support

It may be a quiet lul between exams and Easter, but our support departments are still busy as ever working on student cases. Our Advice and Representation Centre (the ARC) attended and supported one of our students at a Benefits Tribunal and saw the student recieve £5000 in backdated Benefit awards. Their weekly income consequently increased and enhanced their Housing Benefit rate.

This is just one of the many financial support wins we have been able to secure for our students. For this Academic Year (2017/18), we were provided with additional funding from the University (via the BIASC Mental Health project) to enhance the ARC Disability Benefit provision with the aim to support more students who may be eligible to apply for Disability Benefits. We've worked tirelessly to see this applied to as many students in need as possible, and are proud to see the benefits of the funding so quickly.

As an additional result of the funding, our ARC staff have attended relevant training and increased working hours to enable them to be appropriately educated and equipped to support our students through a myriad financial complications. In this instance, our staff were able to research extensively relevant Case Law in order to prepare and present the best case possible to the Benefits Tribunal to secure a positive outcome for the student. The cases are time and person resource intensive, and the funding directly led to this one example of financial gain for a student in our care.
