Tips for Being a Good Neighbour

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbour – be friendly and build a good relationship with them
  • Respect their need for a good night sleep - sound travels especially at night or if windows and doors are open. Make sure you and your visitors keep noise to a minimum (e.g. slamming doors, shouting, loud exciting conversations) Keeping your voice down when coming home late.
  • Look after the property – keep the façade clean, gardens tended and clear the rubbish. Take out the household rubbish and recycling regularly and on the correct day. Make sure it is well wrapped and secured in bag bags, to prevent foxes, rats and other vermin.
  • Inform Neighbours about parties – if you are having a party, let your neighbours know is advance/ Try to have it on a Friday or Saturday and set a finishing time.
  • Park Considerately – Don’t’ block driveways, garage entrances or park in disabled bays
  • Be Mindful of Your Surroundings – Avoid offensive shouting and swearing

Dealing with a Nuisance Problem

Nuisances are anything that affects your ability to enjoy your own property. Nuisances can include smoke, fume or gasses being emitted from premises; animals being kept in a healthy way, noise of vibrations from a building, vehicle or equipment; A build-up of waste or materials that harmful or cause a disturbance; dust, steam, smell or fumes homes factories or businesses.

Step 1: Talk to the Person - Find out where the noise or disturbance is coming from. Politely approach the person causing the issue, introduce yourself, and get their name and address if needed. Explain how the noise affects you and kindly ask if they could reduce it.

STEP 2: Write a formal complaint - If talking doesn’t help, write a polite letter explaining the problem and ask again for the disturbance to stop. Make sure to date the letter, keep a copy, and save any replies. If the noise is coming from a business, send a copy of the letter to their head office to get more attention

STEP 3: Keep Records - If the letter doesn’t work, start a daily diary noting the details of the noise or disturbance. Ask other neighbours who are also affected to keep records too. After about two weeks of keeping notes, you’ll have enough evidence if you need to take further action.
