What is a work placement?
A work placement is usually a longer period of work experience (usually 6–12 months) that is part of your degree. It’s structured, supervised, and assessed as part of your course.
What is an internship?
An internship is a shorter work experience opportunity (often 4–12 weeks) that is not formally part of your degree. It’s usually done during summer or holidays.
What are the differences?
-
Length: Placements are long (months), internships are short (weeks).
-
Part of your degree?: Placements count towards your course; internships don’t.
-
Assessment: Placements are monitored and assessed; internships usually aren’t.
-
Purpose: Placements give in-depth, degree related experience; internships give a general taste of a role or industry.
