Let under-18 students join clubs & societies

Some freshmen join Brunel University at the age of 17. Presently, we cannot obtain Full Union membership online and join any clubs and societies till our 18th birthday, which means that we miss all of Term 1, while other students are socializing. Proposal: Under-18 Membership procedure (an online Parent/Guardian Consent form for societies and non-alcohol-related activities). Information page at brunelstudents.com listing which societies and activities under-18 students may or may not join, along with contact information. Make sure the Membership checkout recognizes under-18 students and sends them to the relevant procedure rather than preventing the transaction from being completed. This will help the Union accommodate and retain young students virtually for free. I’d be glad to assist in testing the procedure as a Course Representative.

12:16pm on 25 Oct 26 Under 18s can join the majority of Clubs and Societies but there is a process to follow which is outlined in our safeguarding policy which can be found on our website: https://brunelstudents.com/pageassets/about/governance/Safeguarding-Policy-Final.pdf “Safeguarding Activities Involving Under 18s U18’s cannot automatically sign up for a club or society membership. When trying to do so they will be directed to contact the Union who will establish what club or society they wish to join, check that it isn’t listed as a high-risk activity and if not, will proceed to let them join, but in doing so will take the following further precautions: • If the group has a regular coach, this coach should apply for an enhanced DBS check. • Committee members for the group will be informed if they have an under-18 member and provided with a guidance document outlining appropriate boundaries and best practice to safeguard both themselves and the under-18. Groups should also be encouraged to organise social activities that do not revolve around alcohol. Once the above steps have taken place, the under-18 can take part.”
