Brunel-WiFi and eduroam should be available throughout all university student accommodation

    Current

    • Halls
Before the campus Wi-Fi upgrade earlier this year, Brunel-WiFi and eduroam were available in university student accommodation. However, following the upgrade, these two networks are no longer accessible in residential areas. Although the existing accommodation Wi-Fi still provides internet access, students can no longer directly access many university internal network services from their accommodation, including network printers and the Horizon virtual desktop environment. This has caused considerable inconvenience, particularly for students who rely on university computing resources for their studies and research. We propose making Brunel-WiFi and eduroam available throughout university accommodation alongside the existing Wi-Fi service, allowing students to access university network resources as they previously could, without having to travel to academic buildings.

8:59am on 27 Oct 26 Hi Yilin, I hope you are well. I have made some enquiries and it seems that there has indeed been a change in how network access is provided. The University have made this decision for a couple of reasons I am told 1) financial 2) security (cyber-attacks). I am going to have some conversations with the University Staff that made this decision to see if anything can be done but there are no guarantees. In the meantime, if students could like and comment on this idea outlining concerns and issues with this decision, that would be incredibly helpful. The more student voices I have the better. Thank you

10:10am on 28 Oct 26 Hi Yilin, Just a follow up, I have also emailed you. As already mentioned, the University have confirmed that not providing corporate network or Eduroam services in the Halls was a deliberate architectural decision and I have subsequently been informed that it is unlikely to be undone. However, the University are really keen to understand the requirements from students to improve the BruNetwork service and would like to get an understanding of the services students would like to have available in the Halls. The issues with Horizon and Print seem to be resolved but I understand that other issues encountered are related to accessing certain university services directly from BruNetwork, for example: • Brunel Connect Portal: https://connect.brunel.ac.uk/ • PaperCut (university printing services): https://papercut.brunel.ac.uk/ • BUSTER HPC Portal: https://hpc.brunel.ac.uk/ There also appears to be stability issues in approximately 500 rooms. We will seek feedback from students to get an understanding of the services students would like to have available in the Halls and what other issues are being encountered. Thanks
