    Improve Wifi in Halls

    Passed
    • Halls
WIFI in my room on campus is shocking, unreliable and very hit and miss. Having spoken to other students on campus, the problem is much bigger than just me. I pay a substantial amount of money for my room and expect to have WIFI that works for me - this is a basic need that is not being fulfilled - what am I paying for? If you also struggle with connection, please comment on this idea with the Halls you are in and the problems you have with WIFI on campus.

11:56am on 14 Oct 25 I agree. The other day I had to sit outside the Isambard studio to attend my interview. the connectivity in the halls/rooms is just beyond worse. Paying 900£ a month just to be embarrassed in front of the employers and having below the standard facilities around the campus/halls.

12:23pm on 14 Oct 25 Thanks for your feedback Himanchi. So the issues you have had are in Isambard Studio? are there any other places on campus you struggle with connectivity?
Vriti Vora
1:44pm on 14 Oct 25 Agreed. The connectivity is worsening day by day. At this point our laptops and iPads are working on our personal phone's data, which is proving to be quite expensive, after paying £1000 per month for the same facilities.

2:37pm on 14 Oct 25 Hi Vriti, where on campus do you have the issue with Wifi, in Halls? if so, which Halls? Thanks for your input!

11:42am on 15 Oct 25 I completely agree; it’s the same in Galbraith hall. The WiFi drops out all the time and is really slow. It’s really frustrating when trying to study or stream lectures.

5:34pm on 15 Oct 25 Hi, Ruth. The Issues are all over the Campus, accommodation complexes specially. In the middle of the lectures I've lost track of my notes.

9:21pm on 16 Oct 25 I do support this because not only I, but my classmates have also experienced issues with the wifi. It keeps disconnecting, and when it does work, it's very slow making it difficult to study. There are problems with the wifi not only in buildings such as the lecture centre or bannerman centre but also in accomodations halls such as Stockwell hall (Lancaster Complex). I hope this can be sorted out as soon as possible as some of us do rely on internet heavily especially when taking notes.

11:31am on 17 Oct 25 The Chief Executive and Presidents will be taking this issue to an operations meeting next week (23rd) and will take all of the feedback we have had to get this pushed to the top of their agenda. We will keep you updated.

9:14am on 20 Nov 25 Subject: Improving Your On-Campus Wi-Fi Experience — What’s Happening Next Thank you to everyone who shared feedback in the recent survey about Wi-Fi in student accommodation. We recognise the concerns raised — particularly around reliability, speed, and connectivity for academic and everyday use — and we want to be clear that fixing this is a priority. Immediate Actions Underway We have already begun targeted technical upgrades in the accommodation areas reporting the highest impact. This includes: • Replacement of specific wireless access points (APs) and upgrading older network switches to improve both stability and throughput. • Focus on coverage dead spots, especially in halls like Mill, Galbraith, and Lacy where student feedback was strongly represented. Dedicated Student Network in Progress We are actively progressing work to move student traffic onto a dedicated JANET internet link, separate from core University services. ? This will reduce contention, improve throughput during busy evening periods, and allow us to ease some current restrictions that exist on the main campus Wi-Fi network (wifi@brunel). Full Network Modernisation — Confirmed Timeline We are currently in the procurement stage for a complete campus-wide network refresh. Student accommodation and wireless services will be the first priority. New network — Phase one Wi-Fi Refresh — Targeted to begin in March 2026 About Platform Restrictions Some of the platforms referenced in survey responses — e.g. some VPN services, certain content platforms — are not affected by Wi-Fi quality, but intentionally restricted for safeguarding, legal compliance, or service protection reasons. These are not faults, but regulated controls required of all UK universities. Should you encounter a website that you believe should not be restricted please contact the Service Desk with details of the site and why you think it should be accessible. Our Cyber Security team will then review your request and grant an exemption if appropriate. However — we fully acknowledge that technical reliability issues are separate and real, and these are what we are addressing immediately. You will receive regular updates as each phase progresses. Thank you for your patience — we are committed to delivering a significantly improved Wi-Fi experience, starting with the actions already underway. Digital Services — Network & Security Team
