How to Get Funding for Your Club or Society
Need money to run events, buy equipment, or support your club or society’s core activity? Here's everything you need to know about Union funding and how to apply.
Step 1: Make Sure Your Core Activities Are in Your Constitution
You can only get Union Grant Funding for core activities. These are things you’ve said your group will run every year in your constitution.
Step 2: Apply for Annual Grant Funding
Once a year, you can apply for Union Grant Funding to support your core activities. This happens before the start of the academic year.
You’ll get emailed a form to fill in and submit to the Student Activities Team. All applications are reviewed against the below criteria by the Student Activities President and Union staff.
Funding decisions take into account:
-
Cost of your core activities
-
Number of members
-
Fundraising and sponsorship plans
-
CASES performance
-
How much funding is available
Final allocations are then approved by the Team Brunel Committee for clubs or the Societies Guild Committee for societies.
Step 3: Wait for Confirmation and Check Your Allocation
You’ll be told how much you’ve been allocated for the year. If you think your group hasn’t received enough to cover your core activities, you can appeal in writing to the Student Activities President.
Appeals are only considered if the funding doesn’t cover core constitutional activity.
Step 4: Use It or Lose It
Grant money needs to be used before 31 July each year.
Step 5: Need More Money During the Year?
You can still apply for extra funding during the year if needed:
These are reviewed by the Team Brunel Committee or Societies Guild Committee.
What You Cannot Use Grant Funding For
Some things are not eligible for Union Grant Funding, including:
-
Events that are not open to all members
-
Club nights, balls or galas unless they are part of your core aim
-
Food and drink (unless linked to the core aim of your society), alcohol is never authorised
-
Personal items like hoodies or equipment
-
Large or one-off promotional materials like roll up banners
-
Activities that do not match your core aims
-
Political campaigning not directly related to students
-
Anything that has already happened
For the full list, check the Club and Society Regulations, or speak to the Student Activities Team.
Other Ways to Fund Your Activities
Your group can also raise money through sponsorships, fundraising or ticketed events. These are called non grant funds, and they can be used for things outside your core activity like socials.
Things to remember:
-
All income must go through your Union account
-
You cannot sign sponsorship contracts yourself. Only the Union can on your behalf
-
All spending must follow the correct finance procedures
