How to Pay Fines and Who’s Responsible

During your time in a club, you may have to deal with fines. These can come from BUCS, LUSL, external competitions, or the Union. Here’s a breakdown of the main types of fines and who is responsible for paying them.

1. BUCS Related Fines

Walkover – Forfeited Matches

  • Voluntary walkover: When the team, club, or Union could have taken reasonable steps to avoid the forfeit

  • Involuntary walkover: When the forfeit was caused by something outside the team’s reasonable control (as judged by BUCS)

Sanctions (from BUCS to your team) for Conceding Walkovers:

League One walkover Two walkovers Three or more walkovers
Premier Tier -3 league points, lose 50% of BUCS points, automatic relegation if bottom of table Additional -3 points, lose all BUCS points, automatic relegation, not eligible for knockouts Further -3 points per walkover, £250 fine plus £100 per extra walkover
Tier 1 -3 league points, lose 50% of BUCS points Additional -3 points, lose all BUCS points, ineligible for knockouts or withdrawn Additional -3 points per walkover, £100 fine plus £50 per extra walkover, not eligible for promotion
Tier 2 and below -3 league points, lose 50% of BUCS points Additional -3 points, lose all BUCS points Additional -3 points per walkover, £50 fine plus £50 per extra walkover, ineligible for promotion and knockouts, automatic withdrawal from knockout competition

Cup Competition Fines:

Competition Fine
National Championship and National Vase £750 fine and loss of all BUCS points for the competition
National Trophy £500 fine and loss of all BUCS points for the competition
National Shield, Conference Cup, Conference Trophy, Conference Shield £250 fine and loss of all BUCS points for the competition

Team Sheet Fines

  • At the end of the season, BUCS review all team sheets

  • If a team has completed less than 60% of their league team sheets, they will get a £100 fine per team

  • Teams are responsible for paying this fine

  • If unpaid by the end of September the following academic year, the team will be removed from the league

No Show (Individual Events)

  • Many events allow withdrawals without a fine if done before the deadline stated in the event information

  • Late withdrawals or no-shows usually result in a fine

  • Withdrawal requests must follow the event’s procedures

  • No fine will be issued for medical withdrawals if:

    • The participant cannot be replaced, and

    • A valid medical or doctor’s note is provided

2. Yellow/Red Card Fines

  • Individuals who get yellow or red cards in fixtures must pay their own fines

  • Once a fine is issued:

    • The club committee and the individual will be emailed

    • The Sports Development Coordinator will add a payment option to the club’s Union page

    • Payment can be made online or at the Union Reception

  • If fines are not paid:

    • Training will be cancelled

    • Walkovers will be recorded until the fine is paid

3. Minibus Fines (Parking or Traffic Offences)

  • For full guidance, see Section 9 of the Union Minibus Drivers Handbook

  • If a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) is issued:

    • The driver will be emailed and will be responsible for paying the full amount directly.

    • A £25 admin fee will also be added as a payment option on the club’s Union page

    • Payment can be made online or at the Union Reception

  • If unpaid, the club will lose access to hiring a Union minibus until the fine is cleared

If you have questions about a fine or how to pay it, contact the Student Activities team or speak to the Sports Development Coordinator in the Union office.
